The minimalist Italian villa lies in Lesa town, which attracts many international buyers, and the likes of Donatella Versace. It was designed by Dara Huang of Design Haus Liberty and architect Roberto Manzetti in 2018, with a raft of high-quality materials and eco features. It is wrapped in frameless, curved glass walls, which give views of the lake from most rooms.

According to the sales details, Villa Mosca Bianco, on sale for the first time in its history, has featured in a number of luxury brand advertising campaigns and international architectural publications, although the owner was unable to specify names.

Villa Mosca Bianco, whose name translates to white fly in Italian, which comes from an Italian idiom meaning something that is rare and unusual, offers an “exclusive waterfront lifestyle in a home that’s a work of art,” said selling agent Alexander Benedetti. Its designers “have written architectural history and have chosen the perfect location for doing it.”

Its interior plan ripples into four wings, each of which forms its undulating shape. Sunlit bedrooms open onto the projecting terrace, supported by brass struts that appear like harp strings. Neutral interiors put the views centre stage and mirror the white light bouncing off the lake.

Villa Mosca Bianco opens onto a light-drenched, two-story garden atrium, with the lake views showcased beyond and established planting within it. A staircase with floating treads winds its way up to the first floor while a brushed brass-cladded fireplace forms the centrepiece to the sitting room.

Its architecture has a quiet, calming, seamless feel, intended to facilitate a relaxed indoor-outdoor lifestyle, “encouraging activities such as yoga, reading, meditation and alfresco dining and entertaining”, along with all the other outdoor pursuits the lake offers.

Bamboo plants soar up through the central atrium, which is ringed by glass walls.

Landscaped gardens surround the house, designed to offer sweeping views of lake and mountains beyond. It has a stepped design, with lawned, stone brick steps, enclosed by privacy-enhancing mature trees. Along its shoreline there is a boat ramp and dock and boat facilities.

The property has been positioned with optimal solar orientation, passive ventilation, and is run on solar power and air source heat pumps, which reduces its consumption by 60%. There is also a passive rainwater collection system and a fruit and vegetable garden offers an abundance of organic produce.

Neighborhood Notes

Set on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore, Lesa and the neighboring municipality of Meina are home to famous villas such as Villa Campari, owned by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, and Villa Mondadori, owned by Donatella Versace, and other extravagant properties and palazzi.

Lake Maggiore is Italy’s second largest lake and Switzerland’s largest lake. It has the snowy tips of the Alps in the distance and many tiny islands, some of which feature lush gardens. Milan Malpensa International Airport is just 25 miles away, while Milan’s city center—Italy’s business and fashion capital— is 50 miles away. The Swiss border is within an hour’s drive.

The Italian lake famously featured in Ernest Hemmingway’s “A Farewell to Arms,” in which the protagonist and his lover row across the lake at midnight to escape the Carabinieri, or the Italian military force, from war-torn Italy to neutral Switzerland.
