LIMA — The Ohio State Beauty Academy presented Centaur of Attention, their spring talent showcase at the University of Northwestern Ohio Event Center. Thirty-eight stylists and their models participated in an avant garde fashion show.

Vice President of Operations and Development at the Ohio State Beauty Academy Jillian Jarvis said, “They’ve worked two months leading up to the show. The students actually picked the theme. It’s based on Greek Mythology. They are very creative. I’m very proud of this group.”

Student creations were viewed by a panel of judges that included Keith Davis of Colors; Bruce Catherine, a distributor for BSG/CosmoProf; Lori Bassett of K18 Hair and Angel Burke of Vanity Nail.

Student Danielle Briley from Bath Township created the design for Daphne. Daphne’s father was the god of the rivers and streams. Daphne became the unwilling object of the infatuation of Apollo, who pursued her against her desires. Just before being kissed by him, Daphne pleaded for help to her river god father, who transformed her into a laurel tree, thus foiling Apollo.

Danielle explained her design. “I started with a wedding dress from Amazon and dyed it blue. I took some flowers from my grandma and I lined the dress. I took tree bark and glued it on. Then the tree branches, I made them out of straws. That way they would be light. I took a cinnamon broom from Hobby Lobby and took the branches off it and glued them on. There are small birds and a nest with eggs in the branches.”

The judges had the task of evaluating each design. Keith Davis from Colors Hair Salon shared that “It has to be unique. It has to be completely different from anybody else. I don’t care how hokey, it’s got to be different.”

The creations were different. As each walked the runway different styles were emphasized. Some designed outfits. One featured pants made of hair. Some specialized in hair design. Medusa featured snakes in her hair. The creativity of the students was overwhelming. The audience frequently burst out in applause for the models and the designers.

Alicia King, Director of Education at the Ohio State Beauty Academy, summarized the evening. “All I can say is ‘Wow.’ They put so much time and energy into it. It kind of gives me goosebumps. It’s pretty inspiring.”

Daphne was designed by Danielle Briley and modeled by Kendra Miller.

The Satyr Wass designed by Madison Coulter and modeled by Amber Gessel.
