The ultra-modern, Scandi-farmhouse-inspired exteriors, designed by Vancouver’s Hotson Architecture promise striking curb appeal

Though many homebuyers have recently left urban centres seeking more room to breathe and grow with greater affordability, there are still some city options that tick those boxes. Look no further than the heart of Richmond to discover a collection of 22 stylish, ground-oriented, row house townhomes that were designed with expansive ease of living in mind.

“Our tagline is more room for the good life,” says Jenny Wun, sales director for Parallel Project Marketing representing the Brighouse Twenty Two project. That means, she expounds, more room in the home — for families, for fun, for convenience, for workspace. “You don’t have to move out of the city.”

The ultra-modern, Scandi-farmhouse-inspired townhouse exteriors, designed by Vancouver’s Hotson Architecture, have striking curb appeal with dramatic peaked roofs and an alternating colour scheme of crisp white and charcoal. Lush, creative plantings around the common grounds and in each front garden, by Prospect & Refuge landscape architects, complement the clean lines of the minimalist design.

“The contrast (of colour) is really to make it really modern and thinking out of the box,” says Wun. “We felt that it stands out from the rest of the neighbourhood.” Hotson, she adds, is a forward-thinking architectural firm.

That approach extends to the use of materials. The exterior finish is high-pressure laminate wood siding, and the arresting black-framed windows are high efficiency triple glazed. “That combination just sustains in our weather,” Wun says, adding that its look is fresh, modern, and timeless. “There are dynamic features to it. The peak roofs give each unit its own feel of form.”

That modern, clean-lined esthetic transitions to the interiors of the three-level, three- or four-bedroom homes. There are two colour palettes of serene neutrals with an interplay of lighter and subtle darker hues. Both of which are enhanced by the natural light from the black-trimmed floor-to -ceiling windows.

“We’re optimizing the natural light that’s coming into the home,” says Wun.

The kitchens, all with waterfall quartz countertops, are a minimalist’s dream with sleek, soft-close cabinets and integrated Bosch appliances, including a retractable range hood.

Undermount counter lighting juxtaposes the uber-sleek, linear gold pendant light over the island. Details like the integrated waste bins expand the space’s functionality while the mix of metals—black hardware paired with gold-hued light fixtures—create visual interest.

Flooring throughout the common areas is durable, easy-care, wide-plank laminate, while the bedrooms and upper hallways boast cosy, cut-pile carpeting.

Envisioned as relaxing retreats, the master bedrooms are airy owing to vaulted ceilings reaching up into the peaked roofs, and expansive enough to accommodate a king-sized bed.

“We have very spacious master bedrooms,” Wun says. “People don’t need to downsize their bed if they’re coming from a house, or they can upsize to a king bed if they’re coming from a condo. We have definitely given that thought of being able to fit your bedside tables or nightstands, plus a king bed, plus some custom organizers in the closet.”

The clean-line esthetic is also reflected in the bathrooms (some homes have three and half baths). The primary ensuite features a large walk-in glass-surround shower. The floor and wall tiles are large format, and countertops are low-maintenance, seamless quartz.

“We’ve done a floating vanity, an under-vanity strip light for softer evening light, undermount sinks again for the clean look,” Wun explains. For a hint of glamour, the gold light bar above the vanity echoes the pendant in the kitchen and is complemented by more matte black hardware.

For added convenience, the laundry units are positioned on the upper bedroom level.

The three-floor homes offer a variety of options for use of space. With ground floor flex spaces, which also have bathrooms, Wun says that area could potentially be a nanny or in-law suite, or a workspace—without any distractions from the upper living space.

“We wanted to make the interiors really comfortable where you could remain for years,” she observes. “We can imagine this type of townhome where there’s going to be large families, multi-generational families.”

Each residence has a large outdoor patio off the main living space which allows for seamless indoor-outdoor living in the warmer months, and, for the younger residents, there is a communal outdoor playground.

Wun says the project is “really well landscaped and it really connects with the street and the community.”

Beyond the immediate community of the 22 homes that comprise Brighouse Twenty Two, residents can find all the convenient amenities of living in the centre of the city. Brighouse SkyTrain station and Richmond Centre mall are a mere 10-minute walk away, along with two nearby city parks.
