The pandemic has prompted many to take a closer look inward.

For the creative team behind the Copenhagen-based brand Ganni, that gaze led to a careful consideration of garbage. More specifically, the brand’s ambition to reduce its contribution to textile waste.

During the 2020 lockdown, Ganni’s creative team, led by creative director Ditte Reffstrup, looked to find a way to create new designs while minimizing waste.

Their solution was the Ganni Re-Cut Capsule, an assemblage of garments made using reworked and deadstock — unsold and unused — materials from their warehouses. In 2021, the brand reused 5,800 pieces for their up-cycling projects.

The unique collection hit home with fashion fans searching for a sustainable alternative, Reffstrup says.

“Our first Re-Cut collection was such a big success and really helped show our community the value of up-cycling,” Reffstrup says.

This season, the company released its second up-cycled capsule, this time in partnership with Canadian luxury retailer Holt Renfrew.

“We are always in touch with the Holt team about how we can further spread the message of responsibility in new and meaningful ways,” Reffstrup explains of the pairing. “We are so aligned on our values, both working to become more responsible versions of ourselves. It just felt right to launch this new initiative with a partner who is as passionate as we are about the meaning behind the collection.”

The collection sees the Danish company’s trademark “affordable luxury” approach applied to 15 designs including dresses, tops, skirts and more, each crafted from cool, repurposed textiles ranging from polka-dot satin to leopard-print jacquard. Reffstrup stresses that no new materials were used for the collection designs.

Available within the retailer’s H Project, a space dedicated to sustainable and eco-conscious offerings, the pieces range in price from $225 to $625.

“It’s one the most exciting challenges for me and the Ganni design team because it forces us to think outside of the box and really get creative with what we already have — you can really feel that in this collection, it mixes a lot of different elements while staying to true to the Ganni DNA,” Reffstrup says. “Putting responsibility at the heart of what we do while never compromising on design is what really brings Ganni and Holts together and this collection is the perfect proof of that.”

When prompted to pick a favourite among the Re-Cut release, the designer pointed to the bright-and-cheery tie-dye two piece featuring a cut-out back in a “punchy” yellow-and-green colour combination.

“(It) just radiates sun and optimism,” Reffstrup says. “It’s absolutely perfect for spring.”

And, perhaps, also the perfect ensemble for the hopeful air of the post-pandemic emergence.
