GREEN LAKE – A historic cultural venue is adding even more space to entertain.

Thrasher Opera House will be renovating its adjacent office building at 510 Mill St. in Green Lake as part of a $3 million capital works project aimed at enhancing the visitor experience.

Dubbed “Creating an Entrance,” the 12-month renovation project is slated to start in spring 2026, transforming the 5,000-square-foot space and current eight-stall parking lot into an outdoor area with a sculpture garden, mural, interactive outdoor instruments, covered seating and a patio space.

“As the Thrasher Opera House has grown from its truly humble beginnings, we realized that the public space in our annex was not adequately meeting the needs of our patrons nor serving our mission as much as we desired,” said Thrasher Opera House Board President Michael Shohoney via a news release.

“The space, as designed, will change the landscape of downtown Green Lake by having a clean, bold façade and entrance along with a beautiful, inviting space for the patrons and public alike.”

What features are being included in the renovated space?

According to the release, the renovated space will include a new façade and digital displays.

The inside is set to feature a reception area, art gallery, gift shop and movable gallery walls for further programming.

Sound panels, enhanced lighting and ADA-accessible restrooms will also be included as part of the setup.

The project is being funded by public and private donations, with the Thrasher House raising more than $2 million in funds and committed gifts.

“Many rural towns have lost their historic opera houses, so we feel incredibly fortunate that ours has not only survived but truly thrived and gets this chance to add another chapter to its story,” Thrasher Opera House Executive Director Rachael Avery wrote in the release.

“We’re fortunate to have a gem like the Thrasher Opera House in our community, and we’re thrilled to transform the 510 building into a space that supports the growth of our nonprofit’s mission.”

Restored by community members in 1997, Thrasher Opera House serves as a hub for the arts in Green Lake and seats 200 patrons. Learn more at thrasheroperahouse.com.
