Former “Teen Mom” star turned designer Chelsea DeBoer and her husband, Cole, are known for taking some big, unexpected risks on their renovation show, “Down Home Fab.”

But in the latest episode, “French Glam Bungalow,” you have to wonder: Have they gone too far?

The stakes are high, as client Landon is Chelsea’s friend as well as her hairstylist. It’s risky enough working for a friend, but when that pal holds your hair in his hands? That takes some grit!

“Friends as clients, that can be tricky,” says Chelsea. “It’s a huge compliment that Landon and [partner] Ty like our design style so much that they want us to redesign their home, but there’s always a little bit of fear mixing business and personal.”

The DeBoers have a budget of $50,000 to redesign Ty and Landon’s 1926 bungalow. Check out what they do, and see some of their most daring design moves yet. While some might make you cringe, they’re proof that beauty is truly in the eye of the homeowner.

Chelsea DeBoer’s latest style: French glam bungalow

As usual, Chelsea comes up with an all-new design style she calls “French glam bungalow,” which is interesting, because from reading her Twitter feed, you get the idea that the closest she’s ever been to France is petting a French bulldog.

Still, she has her own ideas about what this style should be.

“‘French glam bungalow’ to me is bold patterns with gold accents and all the textures that we’re going to be bringing out,” she says. “And then ‘bungalow’ is just a reference of their house. It’s very cozy, it’s a smaller space, and all of that together gives you French glam bungalow.”

Paint the floor for a whole new look

“These planks we’re surfing on?” says Cole as Chelsea slides around on the loose flooring. “They’re just a laminate plank that you can find anywhere. The end goal hope is to find some sweet, original hardwoods that you can repurpose.”

Underneath the laminate, they do find original hardwood boards, but they’re in such bad shape it wouldn’t be worth the effort or expense to refinish them.

“Is there a way that we can do something with the original flooring?” asks Chelsea. “Painting?”

“Absolutely,” says a local flooring expert. “Doing a paint vs. stain, we can mask some of these glaring issues, and when you walk in, you will absolutely know that this is a hardwood floor.”

And so that’s what they do.

“That’s going to flow really nicely into the kitchen and dining room, because we have the black and white flooring in there,” Chelsea says.

Try an outrageous fake fireplace filler

You’ve seen fake fireplaces filled with all sorts of goodies, from fake logs to candles to floral arrangements arranged artistically to digital screens that show a blazing fire.

But all of those fillers aren’t even close to being edgy enough for Chelsea.

“Landon and Ty had disco balls all over their house, so I thought it would be fun if we filled up the fireplace with disco balls,” she says.

They’ve already replaced the couple’s unremarkable fake fireplace surround with an ornate, vintage fireplace mantel the DeBoers painted blush pink, and they painted the box behind it black, so what’s a disco ball or two or 20?

A copper sink creates an eye-catching kitchen

Since she’s going all out in the living room, why not go all out in the kitchen, too, Chelsea reasons. She installs black and white vinyl tiles on the floor and adds green cabinets with black and white countertops. Then she brings in the pièce de résistance: a copper sink.

Who says sinks have to be silver or white?

“I love it!” cries Chelsea as she unwraps the copper sink she’s ordered. “I like that it has texture and character. It goes so nicely with the green cabinets. It’s going to look so good against the countertops. This definitely brings the glam to the French glam bungalow vibe we have going on in here.”

Wallpaper the ceiling in skulls

So this is a trend we’ve seen designers use before, but never quite like this.

“I have the wallpaper. It’s going to go on the ceiling,” says Chelsea. “So it’s got some velvet skulls on it, kind of a fun texture, so I wanted to bring in something moody and something that I know they will love, which is skulls.”

She explains what she’s thinking: “I have a little bit of the inner Goth, and I know Landon and Ty have one, too. This is a one-time opportunity, because you cannot put velvet skull wallpaper on just everybody’s ceiling, so I’m just going to go for it.”

Yes, it was a huge risk, but as she suspected, the homeowners just love it.

Do all of Chelsea DeBoer’s risks pay off?

Chelsea is a little worried when she gives Landon and Ty a tour of their newly redesigned home.

“You guys have been a part of our lives for every important moment for the past 12 years,” she says. “Are we still friends?”

“Best friends! Literally!” says Ty.

“It’s really emotional to think that you guys were the ones that were able to bring this to us,” he continues. “You know, it’s all just above and beyond what we could ever hope for.”

Skulls, disco balls, and all.
