In its efforts to serve more patients, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Washington has recently completed a year-long, $3.75 million renovation of the medical oncology office.

UPMC Hillman Hillman Cancer hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house on Monday to celebrate the project.

A longtime provider of cancer care in Washington, UPMC Hillman, on Johnson Road, is one of only 57 National Cancer Institute – Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country.

That means cancer patients in the Washington area have access to the highest level of care, clinical trials and the latest cancer research available, according to hospital officials.

“UPMC Hillman has been serving the Washington community for nearly four decades and has responded to the continual increase in demand for its services,” said Elizabeth Wild, president of UPMC Hillman. “This latest renovation is part of a broader strategy to meet current growing patient needs and ensure that timely, compassionate care remains close to home.”

The renovation project will expand access by increasing the number of medical oncology treatment chairs from 14 to 19, so more patients can receive treatment simultaneously. Four additional exam rooms and private treatment rooms will offer enhanced privacy and comfort.

The UPMC Hillman location will also add a dedicated “fast-track” chair for patients who need quick services such as port flushes, lab work and injections, which will reduce wait times and streamline care.

The redesigned space also includes a larger waiting room and more efficient layout, which will provide a more welcoming atmosphere.

“Patients in Washington and the surrounding areas appreciate access to advanced treatment options without the burden of traveling far from home,” said Dr. Nitin Kapoor, a medical oncologist at UPMC Hillman in Washington. “Now we can continue to provide that in a more efficient manner and in a spacious, comfortable environment for our patients to make them feel at ease during a difficult time in their lives.”

In addition to the medical oncology upgrades, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Washington recently broke ground on a $6.5 million expansion of its radiation oncology services. The project includes the installation of a second linear accelerator (LINAC), which will significantly increase treatment capacity and improve access to comprehensive cancer care in the region.

UPMC Washington joined UPMC about a year ago, and the renovation project and the radiation oncology expansion are among the projects undertaken during that time.

UPMC has 80 cancer treatment locations throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and Maryland, and centers in Ireland, Italy and Croatia.
