Interior design expert Alykhan Velji weighs in on design trends for 2022

Article content

The past few months have been a little crazy both in the design and construction worlds. With so many delays in delivery times of furniture, fabrics, appliances, lumber and everything in between, it has been a struggle to ensure projects stay on track. We have had to be quick on our feet to make reselections or deal with crazy delays. Having said all this, I am excited about the new year and the changes that it will hopefully bring, along with new design trends. The new year is all about a refresh, starting over and getting in tune with yourself. I feel like that always starts at home as this is the area you spend the most time in. Why not make it a comfortable, warm and inviting space? I am happy to report that is where we are heading in terms of design and decor trends for the new year. Here are a few of my favourites.

CREAMS

This colour is making a big resurgence in design for 2022. It provides so much warmth to a space and is a departure
from the white we are all so used to. For cabinets, walls, accessories or tiles, cream is the way of 2022. Just make sure it doesn’t have a yellow undertone — it has to be fresh and work well with natural wood tones.

KITCHEN MIX

Mix it up in the kitchen with all the design details. Think about adding subtle details no matter how big or small your kitchen is. In this space, we wanted to make the island a feature, so instead of having the countertop waterfall to the ground, we added a gorgeous reeded detail at the bottom. The handmade square tiles that wrap the backsplash, as well as the hood fan, also add a lot of interest without being overwhelming. The key is to use details sparingly but make sure they are noticeable to make your kitchen sing.

STAINED GLASS

A lost art in design that I am bringing back! Stained glass is not just for traditional spaces or churches and can be customized to have more modern patterns. We designed this custom glass partition to be a focal point in the home as it can be seen from all areas of the main floor. It gives that perfect subdued colour palette and glows when the sun streams through the house. It is also a unique detail that you can customize, making it completely your own, and I love that.

WARM WOOD TONES

The warmer the better when it comes to wood tones for 2022. I love how rich these warmer wood tones look on floors, cabinetry and furniture. Warm walnuts and oaks with lots of grain are perfect and can work with both traditional and modern interiors.

DRAMA IN THE BATHROOM

Bathrooms are becoming less airy and more dramatic with the use of unique tiles, countertops, plumbing and design details. For this bathroom, the shower is the showstopper. A lovely marble-looking tile in tones of grey installed in a herringbone pattern adds so much texture, while the black framed glass and curbless shower make for a picture-perfect moment. Lighting plays a huge role in creating a dramatic effect, so decorative lighting layered with overhead lighting throughout the bathroom can really help to create an amazing effect. The reeded detail is also introduced behind the freestanding tub to create warmth, as does the vanity. Bathrooms can still be spa retreats, but with a touch of drama.
