Whirl & Whittle Side-by-Side Mirror
Whirl & Whittle founder Pooja Pawaskar creates her furniture using the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, or the world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection and finding beauty in everything. She primarily works with wood, and celebrates the wood’s imperfection in each piece. She is a trained architect, as well as a furniture designer, and was inspired by her grandfather, who made furniture in India. No two pieces of wood are the same, and this is something she celebrates within her work. All of her furniture is handmade. Part of her collection, “Not Whole, but Complete,” the Side-by-Side Mirror ($2,300) is a round mirror with the choice of one or two spalted wooden sculptures affixed on a small section along the mirror. “Looking at the reflection of the wood while looking at your own reflection is a way of looking inward, noticing your imperfections and seeing your growth, and finding beauty in what you have a feeling grateful for it,” Pawaskar writes in the description. whirlandwhittle.com
Tapis Rouge Modern Rug
So much more than a modern rug, this product from Tapis Rouge was inspired by Googie, a type of futurist architecture popular in the 1950s and 60s and part of the American retro-futurism movement. Googie was most popular among motels, coffee houses and gas stations and later morphed into mid-century modern style (think: TWA’s terminal). The Modern Rug ($5,920) specifically represents the flourishing of technologies and the possibilities promised during WWII. A burst of color for any room, this is the perfect gift for fans of mid-century modern style and who value meaning in what they put within their home.
