Space, the final frontier — and no, we’re not talking Star Trek here, although there is a bit of a planetarium-type vibe in the upstairs bonus room of the new Edmonton STARS Lottery dream home.

This $918,000, two-storey house from Concept Homes in the Village at Griesbach comes in at 2,390 square feet. It has an urban rustic feel and includes just about everything you would want in a grand prize lottery home.

But it has something more: space, as in storage options and well-designed spaces. This floor plan won’t leave you wondering where your possessions should go should you win this home and the $20,000 in cash that comes with it.

In the kitchen — part of the open-concept living, dining and cooking zone, with kitchen cabinetry done in a wood vinyl style that gives off a beach-like driftwood vibe — what might have been a nondescript pantry with standard shelving has been transformed into a butler’s pantry; same size space but more functional and it doubles as a second prep area.

If you head to the garage, it’s been designed as a three-car version with two tandem spots on one side, and room for another vehicle on the other side. Or as Concept Homes president Rick Hinteregger said, the added tandem spot can be a workshop or used for extra storage.

Upstairs, a wide, spacious hallway provides a catwalk-like impression with an open-to-below view yet doesn’t cut into the size of the second and third bedrooms. Meanwhile, the primary suite comes with an expansive behind-the-wall walk-in closet.

Concept, however, didn’t stop at making space, as in storage, the star. The bonus room has a dome — a nine-and-a-half foot satellite dish — that includes some 620 fibre-optic lights designed to mimic the night sky. There are also a number of other ceiling and wall design features, with artistic glass panels that enhance the design scheme; upstairs a set of three echo the jet stream and are reminiscent of the Aurora Borealis.

In a more down-to-earth touch, the primary ensuite includes a graphic tile segment that brings in a tasteful graffiti tone. There are also fun, yet functional touches throughout, like a plumbing bar with valve-like knobs to hold towels in that same ensuite, or the wood root ball, which serves as the base for the great room coffee table.

Benjamin Moore’s Upper West Side, a light shade of brown with a hint of grey, is the home’s main colour choice, while its Gentleman’s Gray, which comes off as navy to most eyes, is used on accents and the primary suite, said Beauideal Interior Design’s Jacquie Cormier, the home’s designer.

This 2022 STARS home marks the 14th straight year Concept has done the Edmonton home.

“They’ve actually become part of our family,” said Dave Hinteregger, Concept’s vice-president. “To do the lottery home once was a blessing, to do 13 more houses for them means so much more.”

The Hintereggers said every time they see a STARS air ambulance in the sky, there’s a sense of pride that they’ve been able to help STARS help others. And while the person the air ambulance is transporting is likely in an emergency situation, Dave noted that person’s chances for recovery are improved thanks to STARS.

The lottery, said STARS’ Megan Thomson, provides the organization with crucial funding, noting the net proceeds can reach $10 million, enough to fund an entire base.
