A $1.7 million expansion is underway at a Louisville preschool.

Carriage House for Children is working to offer more educational services to families in our region.

“We’re expanding Carriage House by 5,100 square feet,” said Lori Wilson, executive director of Carriage House.

She said fundraising started in 2022.

Miranda Construction broke ground on the project in June 2024 at the preschool’s Eastpoint Office Park location.

“So it’s going to enable us to have four additional group ABA rooms, as well as a sensory gym and bathrooms and laundry room, which we’re really excited about,” Wilson said.

Carriage House offers traditional preschool for children ages one to six, and through a partnership with Families For Effective Autism Treatment of Louisville, provides a specialized, intensive program for children diagnosed with autism and related disorders.

“It really gives a wonderful opportunity for peer modeling, for generalization of skill, and then even for our peers that are part of the program, we are teaching our little people to be inclusive and empathetic in their growing, to be these adults that are making major change in our community,” said Wilson.

The school’s waiting list hit 177 kids in 2024.

Wilson said the expansion will allow Carriage House to cut its waiting list and offer more services to more children.

“Carriage House is going to be able to offer programming that’s going to be specific to his needs,” said mother Hailey West.

West and Julius Gagne’s 3-year-old son Hugh has been on the waiting list since he was diagnosed with autism last October.

“There’s plenty of kids like Hugh across the city that don’t have as many options, and so it’s great that they’re expanding and opening it up for more kids,” said Gagne.

Hugh and dozens of other kids will begin their new learning journey at Carriage House when the expansion is complete in January.

“My hope is just really that we continue to leave a mark on families lives and get these kiddos started on a journey for a lifetime of success,” Wilson said.

The expansion will officially open on Jan. 6, 2025, allowing Carriage House to serve 50 additional children.
