Building dreams: Learn how Mickey Stengel Build Design Renovate LLC transforms homes with expertise and care

Community Impact sat down with owner Mickey Stengel to discuss his journey in the remodeling industry, the craftsmanship that sets his company apart and how his team helps homeowners navigate the renovation process with confidence.
Can you describe your journey to opening Mickey Stengel Build Design Renovate LLC and what inspired you to do so?
Stengel: My dad was a farmer and always did all his own building and repairs, and my mother was a bit of an artist, so remodeling has always been of interest to me. I was 10 when I first took an interest in painting my bathroom cabinets in the home I was raised in.
After graduating college and completing my master’s degree, the industry I thought I wanted to practice in was in a recession. I had to pivot and chose to work in the industry that came naturally to me and that I enjoyed—building and construction.
I started with building fine furniture, as well as understanding woods, paints and stains. Then I moved into home construction. I quickly learned about cabinet work, tile work and framing. I remodeled [my family’s] homes by myself before I took a job with a track home builder for several years. I then branched out into commercial construction. Although I valued everything I learned, I found I really missed customer relations. Because of that, I was hired by a high-end custom builder and built custom homes for several years. I stayed with that builder until I decided to go out on my own.
What sets your company apart?
Stengel: In almost every one of our Google reviews, my team is mentioned. They have been with me for most of our 17 years in business. They are fabulous, well-liked by my clients, dependable and trustworthy. We have done many full house remodels, additions and small projects. We’re a one-stop shop because we also do roofing, windows and outdoor living spaces. We are often challenged with new problems to solve, and we always succeed.
What aspects of home design do you enjoy the most, and how do you collaborate with homeowners during the remodeling process?
Stengel: My favorite projects are designing kitchens, baths and new spaces. I love to blend contemporary style with traditional elements of wood and natural stone to achieve the transitional look that seems to please a lot of individuals.
On occasion, I’ll work with designers that the homeowner chooses, but most of the time I help the customer design and put together the finishing touches. I always have creative ideas if they need help to move forward in a new direction. I strive to make the process fun.
Home remodeling can be stressful for homeowners. How does your process help clients navigate challenges and uncertainties?
Stengel: I coined the term “remodeling anxiety,” which hits almost everyone to a degree. It’s very stressful to make expensive decisions and to live through the disruption of the project. I have come to expect it, and I have certainly experienced it myself. I fully understand the concerns of cost, delays and whether you will love the result.
My attention to detail, integrity and ability to problem solve makes the remodeling process smoother and more enjoyable. My goal is to ease my clients’ stress. I prioritize clear communication, set realistic expectations and keep them informed every step of the way.
I’ve also learned the importance of listening to all clients involved in a project, ensuring they all feel heard and incorporating their ideas into the final decisions. Home renovation is an emotional process, and finding the right path with vision and collaboration is the way to success.
I believe that a great renovation isn’t just about transforming space. It’s about creating a positive experience for the homeowner. I strive to turn a house into a home the client will love for generations and create wonderful memories in.
I have appreciated the opportunity to have worked with hundreds of different clients over the years, and there is always something to learn from them.
What advice would you give to homeowners considering a remodel?
Stengel: My top six pieces of advice would be:
- Have a vision of what you want. If you don’t have a vision, choose a builder that can cast the vision and share creative ideas.
- Create a budget with a contingency fund of 10-20% extra for unexpected costs.
- Choose the right contractor with experience and solid references. Make sure the timeline is clear and ask for consistent updates to help reduce remodeling anxiety.
- Be flexible and trust the process. Some delays or changes may be necessary.
- Quality materials matter, and the cost difference is minute in the long run.
- Stay involved but trust your contractor. Micromanaging every step can slow the process down. Find the right balance.
