From ‘New Girl’ to ‘Full House,’ the Property Brothers revamp iconic tv homes
If Jonathan and Drew Scott ever took on Hollywood, some of television’s most iconic homes would look very different (and a lot more fun). During an interview with our entertainment reporter Courtney Tezeno, the Property Brothers imagined renovating beloved TV houses, offering up playful design ideas, nostalgic callbacks, and plenty of brotherly banter.

After discussing season eight’s premiere episode of “Celebrity IOU with John Stamos,” the conversation turned to what the brothers would want to change in the “Full House” home, where Stamos played Uncle Jesse.

Full House
The narrow but legendary San Francisco house is packed with kids, adults, and constant chaos. Jonathan Scott immediately zeroed in on what he felt was an obvious missed opportunity.
“I feel like it’s such a tall, skinny house, and such a fun family. They needed a firefighter pole right down the middle. Why would they not have put that in there?”

Drew agreed the house needed work, though his focus was on functionality. “Because there’s so many people in the house, and so many people coming and going all the time, we need to work on that main areahow do we maximize the flow from those steps where you come into the main living space?” Jonathan, however, wasn’t budging: “A firefighter pole. Duh.”

Home Improvement
“Home Improvement” was a sitcom staple of the ’90s. Jonathan joked about the show’s famously nosey neighbor, saying, “We need a slightly larger fence. Slightly higher fence so your neighbor’s not peeking in on you all the time.”

Drew suggested expanding the home’s footprint with a guest space for Tim Allen’s best friend and sidekick, adding, “Get a little ADU for Al [Borland], so he can move in.” He also critiqued the home’s dated style, calling it “a kind of guy house.”
New Girl
“New Girl” brought out some of the funniest renovation ideas, particularly when it came to Nick Miller. “Nick’s bedroom’s a disaster,” Jonathan, who is engaged to Zooey Deschanel, the real-life Jessica Day on the sitcom, said. “He might need his own laundry machine in there.”

When Tezeno suggested the show’s iconic loft bathroom, Jonathan agreed enthusiastically. “We needed to have those drying racks for your towels, because we also know that Nick never washes his towels.” Drew summed it up bluntly: “Nick sounds like the kind of roommate you need to get rid of.”

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
As for the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” mansion, there was only one area worth investing in for the wealthy Banks family.
Drew noted the challenge of scale since it is “six times larger than anyone’s home,” saying the massive common areas could feel empty without purpose. Jonathan’s solution? “You need a dance stage for Carlton You would put in a theater stage.”

The Brady Bunch
When the topic of sunken living room design trend came up, seen in shows like “The Brady Bunch,” “The Cosby Show” and “Friends,” Drew didn’t hold back: “Whoever invented the sunken living room back in the ’50s and ’60s, they don’t know how people live, because I trip every day.”
The brothers reflected on renovating the house during “The Brady Bunch Project” in 2019. Jonathan explained that the real-life home looked nothing like the TV set, including “redoing the whole staircase.”

“When you go into the house, it looked nothing like the Brady house.” Recreating the interior was no small feat. “Nothing lined up. Windows didn’t line up where they’re supposed to be, so it was a crazy amount of work.” One standout space for Jonathan was “The father’s denMoody, yeah, it was fun.”
