Hospice House of Williamsburg to Close Temporarily for Renovations
WILLIAMSBURG — Hospice House of Williamsburg announced plans today to temporarily pause admissions to the house beginning July 22 to complete a multi-phase renovation to upgrade guest suites and modernize the facility.
The house will be closed for approximately 12 weeks.
“We believe that the quality of end-of-life care we provide for our guests and their loved ones would be compromised if we tried to operate in conjunction with a project of this magnitude, and we are not willing to risk an unpleasant experience for any guest or family,” said Brandon Randall, Hospice House Executive Director.
This closure marks the third and final phase of a planned renovation of the Hospice House of Williamsburg, involving a reimagined front lobby, clinical area, and redesign of the four guest suites, it said.
According to Hospice House of Williamsburg, the first phase of the renovation was completed in 2023 and included renovations of the common spaces. The second phase, completed in 2024, transformed the second floor of the house where staff and administrative offices are located.
It said included in this phase of the renovation, among other projects, are the following improvements:
- Additional space in guest suites that will allow for more family members and visitors to be with loved ones.
- Addition of a nurse station to better serve guests.
- Upgraded technology for clinical care and guest experience.
- HVAC upgrades.
- Enhanced consultation spaces for families to meet.
Established in 1982, Hospice House of Williamsburg is a not-for-profit social model hospice. It notes that all services are delivered free of charge and include on-site, end-of-life, 24/7 care in four guest suites at the house; bereavement services for surviving family members; and education on end-of-life for the community at large.
The Hospice House of Williamsburg facility was built with community donations and opened in July 2002. Since then, nearly 3,000 guests have been served there.
“While this disruption in service does sadden us because we always want to be open and ready for those who need us, we are encouraged because we know that we’ll re-open better and be positioned for many more years of service,” said Elizabeth White, President of the Hospice House Board.
Hospice House of Williamsburg clinical team members will be available throughout this period, it said, and bereavement support services will continue without interruption.
Renovation progress photos will be posted on the Hospice House of Williamsburg website.
